New York Harbor has served as the city's maritime gateway since 1624, when Dutch traders established a settlement at the southern tip of Manhattan Island.
The estuary where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic became the busiest port in the Western Hemisphere by 1900, handling over half of the nation's oceangoing cargo. Today the harbor stretches across 650 square miles of open water, tidal straits, and protected inlets, bordered by five boroughs and two states.
The Statue of Liberty arrived in the harbor in June 1885, shipped in 350 individual pieces aboard the French frigate Isère. Workers spent four months assembling Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's 151-foot copper figure atop her pedestal on what was then Bedloe's Island. Liberty Enlightening the World became the first landmark visible to twelve million immigrants passing through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. Evening illumination of the statue began in 1916 with floodlights installed by General Electric; the current LED system, operational since 2000, draws 3.2 megawatts and is visible from lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights.
Manhattan's waterfront skyline rose in three distinct waves. The Woolworth Building held the world's tallest crown from 1913 to 1930 at 792 feet. The Art Deco spire of the Empire State Building followed in 1931, remaining the city's tallest structure for four decades. One World Trade Center, completed in 2014, now stands at 1,776 feet, its observation deck offering sightlines that stretch to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge thirteen miles south. From the water, these vertical axes trace the city's century of upward ambition.
Boat tours NYC night have operated from the west side piers since the 1940s, when Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises launched its first harbor route. Pier 83 at West 42nd Street became the fleet's permanent berth in 1950, rebuilt in 2010 with a glass-walled terminal and floating boarding platforms. Evening departures typically trace a counterclockwise loop past the Intrepid, south along the Hudson River Greenway, around the Battery, north through the East River beneath the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, then back through Hell Gate. The 90-minute circuit covers approximately nine nautical miles.
